Classroom Interaction: Miller Theatre's commitment to
educating future audiences extends beyond the Miller stage to the classroom. In
partnership with local public and private schools, Miller Theatre brings
featured artists and musicians directly to the students. In master classes,
demonstrations, performances, and collaborations, the students interact with
these professional artists, increasing awareness of classical music and its
benefits.
Columbia Performers Partnership supports CU student
performing arts groups by providing performance space, production assistance, and marketing services.
These partnerships help to promote young artist development, foster interdepartmental collaboration,
and share Columbia University's artistic talents with a broader audience.
Organizations participating during the 2008-2009 season include the Columbia Ballet Collaborative, Columbia Classical Performers, CU Orchestra, Columbia Jazz Ensemble, and the Barnard-Columbia-Juilliard program.
Commissioned Program Notes: To enhance the concert-going
experience and educate audiences, Miller Theatre has commissioned professional
writer and music critic Paul Griffiths to write the program notes for each of
this season's concerts. These notes are also available online and can be
accessed approximately two weeks prior to the event. Click
here for more details.
Live from Miller Theatre is a weekly radio show airing every
Friday from 4:30-6:00PM on WKCR 89.9FM. It's an exciting mix of contemporary
music, jazz, and early music, selections from recent and historic Miller
performances, along with informed commentary from special guests, including
composers and artists featured in the current season. Hosted by Lauren Bailey, Denise Blostein,
and Melissa Smey, the show gives listeners an in-depth look at the concerts and artists of Miller Theatre.
Lunchtime Concerts series: Launched in the 2007-2008 season to
great acclaim, this is a series of free, informal one-hour concerts held in the
comfortable graduate student lounge of Philosophy Hall. The aim is to bring
high quality performances directly fo the campus community at a convenient time
and location, helping to remove an often-cited barrier to concert attendance.
The series provides a rare opportunity to hear world-class performers in an
intimate, friendly setting.
