Touring Composer Portrait
The Complete String Quartets Third String Quartet (2008) THIS EVENT HAS ALREADY OCCURED IN A PREVIOUS SEASON! Fred Lerdahl’s music is all about variation: building colorful, complex soundscapes from small melodic ideas. A Guggenheim fellow and composition professor at Columbia, he has had a tremendous impact, not only as a composer but also as an accomplished scholar and theorist. In this program, the Daedalus Quartet gives an authoritative performance of his three acclaimed string quartets, written over a span of three decades from 1978 to 2008, and expressly intended by the composer to be performed as a cycle. The third quartet—a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize—was written especially for Daedalus. ; ; |
